In 2017 the Salamatof Tribe began a process to initiate its tribal government – twenty-eight years after first being established as a non-profit Tribal Council in 1989, and 40 some years after the land claims of 1971. It was in 1993 that the Salamatof Tribe received Federal recognition.
The mission of the Salamatof Tribe is to exercise its sovereign rights and powers, to preserve the integrity of the Tribal history and culture and to improve the lives of its Tribal citizens. In the exercise of Tribal rights the Tribe will conserve and retain tribal lands and resources, establish and carryout justice pursuant to Denaina Tribal law and customs and to increase the variety and quality of services provided to Tribal citizens.
